Anthony Way

Anthony Way is a Director and Managing Partner of The Energy Contract Company, a commercial consultancy to the global energy industry. In this role, he has worked extensively as advisor to several major oil and gas companies and on a large number of energy projects worldwide. In his 30 years’ experience in the industry, he has led the negotiation of more than fifteen gas/LNG sale and purchase agreements in Asia, Europe and Africa and been involved, with a senior role, in many project financings. Anthony also frequently acts as an Expert in international disputes in the gas industry.

He has worked extensively on a number of major energy projects, worldwide, with recent assignments and appointments including:

  • Appointment as Expert to the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce in the resolution of a high value contractual dispute relating to gas sales in Central Europe.
  • Commercial Advisor to the Energy Market Authority (of the Government of Singapore) during the negotiation of contracts for the successful financial close of a new LNG import terminal.
  • Appointed as Expert by NaftoGaz of Ukraine in its current (2015) dispute on contractual terms with Gazprom concerning the pricing of gas imported from Russia, and the transit of gas through Ukraine.
  • Acted as Expert for Edison SpA of Italy in Price Review disputes (2011 to 2014) with its main international gas and LNG suppliers.
  • Acted as Expert for Engie (previously GDF Suez) of France in Price Review disputes (2011 to 2015) with gas suppliers to its operations in France Belgium and Italy.
  • Appointed as Expert to E.ON Global Commodities, Germany in disputed Price Reviews in its major gas supply contracts (from 2013 to 2015); advice on the disputed transition to hub-based pricing in these supply contracts.
  • Acted as Expert for Enel SpA of Italy in Price Review disputes (2013 to 2015) with a number of its international suppliers of gas.
  • Acted as Expert for Gas Natural Fenosa of Spain in a Price Review disputes (2012 to 2015) with its main international gas supplier.
  • Expert Advisor to the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) in its resolution of a Kazakh/Russia oil pricing and pipeline transportation issue in the London Court of International Arbitration.
  • Appointed as Expert to Gasum Oy, Finland in a disputed Price Reviews under its gas supply contract from Russia (2015).
  • Appointed as Expert to Danish Oil & Natural Gas, DONG, of Denmark in disputed Price Reviews in its major gas supply contracts (from 2014 to 2015); advice on the disputed transition to hub-based pricing in these supply contracts.
  • Appointed as Expert Advisor to RWE, Essen, Germany in all of its major gas supply contracts under Price Review, (from 2005 to 2013); advice on the resolution of disputed changes to price and commercial terms in these multiple supply contracts under the risk of possible arbitration.
  • Acted as Expert Advisor to the Foreign Parties in their resolution of a very large scale dispute concerning oil production and sale from oilfields in Sudan.
  • Appointed as Expert Advisor to Nuon, Amsterdam, Netherlands on a potential commercial dispute in its Norwegian gas supply.
  • Advisor to Addax Petroleum on its programme to meet the Flares-Out requirement in its operations in Nigeria; including negotiating the sale of gas currently being flared; sale of gas in UK from LNG Sources; including a leading role in the negotiation of all the commercial agreements.
  • Acted as Expert for Petronas in a Contract Sales Price dispute in a large-scale international gas sale into petrochemicals at Terrenganau, Malaysia.
  • Commercial Advisor to the Central Energy Fund (of the Government of South Africa) regarding its planned new LNG import terminal.
  • Advice to Emirates National Oil Corporation on the sourcing of gas supplies to Dubai.
  • Advisor to Northwest Shelf Sellers of Australia regarding price reviews potentially going into Arbitration regarding LNG sales to Japanese buyers
  • Commercial advice to Interstate Gas (and Ministry of Energy) of Pakistan on the terms for the purchase and transport of gas from Iran (including a leading role in the negotiations) and from Turkmenistan;
  • Insourced into OMV UK to commercially manage the negotiation of the Transportation Agreement for North Sea gas and NGL production through a third party pipeline.
  • Extensive advice to the BG Group at a senior level on several of its large scale oil and gas projects under development in Italy Indonesia; and India.
  • Insourced into Hess as Commercial Manager to manage a number of North Sea gas production and marketing activities.
  • Advice to SEP, Netherlands (including leading commercial negotiations) on the reassignment of its multi-billion Euro gas contract with the Norwegian Troll Field as part of its break-up.

Anthony also leads many training courses and workshops on all commercial aspects of the oil, gas and power industries, the most recent of which have been around negotiating successful gas and LNG contracts, and risk.

Prior to the Energy Contract Company, Anthony was a Senior Vice President of Enron International, responsible for one of its international regions. In that role, he was successful in a number of IPP and natural gas developments, fully responsible for all aspects of these projects, including the contractual and financing arrangements. Prior to that, he had a successful 16 year career with Amoco Production Co, working in Europe, the USA and in International operations. In this role, he instigated and completed several gas field developments based upon extensive contractual negotiation, the largest of which was the $2.1 billion development of the Everest & Lomond gas fields in the North Sea.

Anthony holds a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Cambridge University and in Business Administration from DUBS Business School in the UK.
